Flowing Banquet 流水席
The "Flowing Banquet" (Liushuixi) is a time-honored traditional banquet custom in rural Sichuan. Known for its grand scale and continuous operation, it typically involves guests being served in rotating batches, creating an uninterrupted flow of dining activity. More than just a culinary practice, it serves as a vital medium for social interaction and a significant of collective memory within the community.
Flowing Banquet is an open art project structured around a ten-day cycle. Drawing on the concept of the “flowing banquet,” the project emphasizes temporality and fluidity, with a core focus on exchange, dialogue, and the construction of relationships throughout the process.
The project incorporates exhibitions, talks, improvised actions, and forms of public engagement. Within a shared thematic framework, exhibition content is renewed every ten days, generating new works and discussions, and allowing the space to remain in a constant state of formation and transformation.
The space is open to all participants. Anyone may join at any point, engaging in dialogue and shared experience on an equal footing. The project aims to explore decentralized artistic practices and non-hierarchical modes of participation. Flowing Banquet extends the curatorial and institutional vision of Fishead Lab, which is rooted in community-based artistic culture and seeks to foster direct connections between artists, curators, collectors, and the public. Through this initiative, the project aims to provide practical opportunities for emerging artists and curators, encourage long-term community exchange, and expand public understanding of contemporary art and its modes of participation.
