This film is the culmination of six years of collaborative research with Newar interlocutors. As modernization accelerates across Nepal, the ritual tradition documented here faces growing challenges: none more pressing than the waning interest of younger generations. In making this film, I hope not only to bring wider attention to this tradition, but to give voice to its protagonists. My deepest hope is that audiences will come to see this five-hundred-year-old tradition, and to see the quiet dedication of those who sustain it.

Il film è il risultato di sei anni di ricerca collaborativa con interlocutori Newar. A causa della rapida modernizzazione del Nepal, la tradizione rituale documentata nel film si trova oggi ad affrontare sfide sempre più pressanti, tra cui il progressivo disinteresse delle giovani generazioni. Con questo film spero non solo di richiamare l'attenzione su questa tradizione, ma anche di dare voce alle prospettive dei protagonisti. Il mio obiettivo è sensibilizzare il pubblico nei confronti di questa tradizione e portare alla luce gli sforzi silenziosi che i protagonisti compiono dietro le quinte per preservare una tradizione che affonda le sue radici in cinquecento anni di storia.

Director Short Bio

Shan Du is an ethnomusicologist and filmmaker based in Milan. She received her Ph.D. in Visual, Performing and Media Arts from the University of Bologna in 2023 and completed her post-doctoral research at the University of Milan in 2025. She currently collaborates with the Audiovisual Ethnography Laboratory (LEAV) at the University of Milan and with the ERC project MANTRAMS at the University of Tübingen. Her research interests lie in the musical traditions of Nepal and Southern Italy, as well as soundscapes in urban spaces across Italy and China.

Shan Du è un'etnomusicologa e filmmaker con sede a Milano. Ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in Arti Visive, Performative e Mediali presso l'Università di Bologna nel 2023 e successivamente nel 2025 ha completato la sua ricerca post-dottorale presso l'Università degli Studi di Milano. Attualmente Shan collabora con l’Audiovisual Ethnography Laboratory (LEAV) dell'Università di Milano e con il progetto ERC MANTRAMS dell'Università di Tübingen. I suoi interessi di ricerca si concentrano sulle tradizioni musicali del Nepal e dell’Italia meridionale, nonché sui paesaggi sonori degli spazi urbani in Italia e in Cina.
